Our partnership began with Rady Children’s Hospital on Dec 4, 2015 when Izzy was transferred to Rady Children’s Hospital Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at two days old.  Izzy, the great granddaughter of our founder Frank Fornaca, was diagnosed with a Heart Defect Transposition of the Greater Arteries (TGA).

In this rare but serious heart defect, the two main arteries leaving the heart are reversed. Blood cannot circulate properly, leaving the body’s organs severely lacking much-needed oxygen. Without immediate treatment, the congenital condition can cause serious complications, including death.

Izzy immediately underwent cardiac catheterization to help improve the mixing of oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood. And then, at only 6 days old, she underwent open-heart surgery to complete an atrial switch to align the aorta and pulmonary ventricle with the correct chambers of the heart. She made an incredible recovery and was released from the hospital in time to be home for her first Christmas and spent a total of 16 days at Rady.

Today, Izzy is a happy, healthy, smart and strong 8-year-old and Big Sister. She still doesn’t know what she went through but her family will never forget and have made it their mission to give back to Rady Children’s Hospital focusing on the Heart Institute.  Since Izzy’s open-heart surgery, Frank Subaru have raised $242,349 for the Heart Institute at Rady Children’s Hospital via the Subaru Share the Love Event.

Now through January 4, 2021 Subaru will donate $250 to four national charities and or two hometown charities designated by the purchaser or lessee. For every new Subaru vehicle sold or leased during the campaign period at Frank Subaru , we will donate a minimum of $50 in total to their registered Hometown Charities.
